Ernakulam was ranked as the best city in Kerala to live in, according to a survey conducted by India Today. The name Ernakulam is derived from Erayanarkulam which means the abode of Lord Shiva and 'Kochi' (Malayalam: കൊച്ച) which translates into "small lagoon". Ernakulam was also known as "Rishinagarakotta" during the period of Chera dynasty. After Kochi rose into prominence, Ernakulam served as its capital and was called Rajakshethram (the Royal Capital). The city is also famous for its traditional coir industries – Kappadu, Puthuvype etc., with origins dating back to 14th century AD; they are now designated as heritage centres by government order.
