The city is situated on the banks of River Nandini. It is also known as "Bhoomi Thirtha Nagari" (The Land of Earthly Delights). Puttur has a population of around 70,000 people and covers an area of . Puttur was formerly called 'Pattadakalapura' or 'Pattada Kalapura'. The name Pattadakalpura came from the fact that it was ruled by kings belonging to the Chalukya dynasty who were referred to as "Kulothungas". It later became Pattur-Kalappur before finally becoming Puttur. In ancient times, this region had been under rule by many dynasties like Kadambas, Gangas etc., but in 12th century AD it came under Cholas and then Vijayanagara Empire.
