The name "Mysore" is an anglicised version of Mahishūru (Devanagari: महीशूरु), which means the abode of Mahisha in the vernacular Kannada. The common noun "Mahisha" () refers to a mythological demon that could assume the form of both human and animal, opposed to Hindu deities like Indra (the king of gods) and Ganesha who were regarded as Devas (). According to Hindu mythology, Mahishāsur was killed by Shiva with his trident after angering him. The site where he died came to be known as Maisuru and later became Mysore.
