Hospet is the second largest city in Karnataka after Bangalore. It has a population of about 1,10,000 and an area of nearly 16 square kilometres (6 sq mi). Hospet was once called "The City Of Gold". The name Hosapete is derived from the Kannada word 'hosa' meaning 'new', and patti which means village or town. History: In 1336 AD, Hampi was captured by Harihara I along with Bukka Raya I who later became emperor. In 1485 AD Krishnadevaraya made it his capital city when he defeated Bahamani Sultans at Talikota in 1565 A D . He named it Vijayanagara after himself as per his father's wish to build a new vijayana(victorious) nagara(city). This place remained as capital till 1570AD when Tuluva king Sadashiva Raya shifted the capital to Penukonda due to some internal conflicts within royal family members for power sharing between them..
