Dharwad is the second largest city in North Karnataka after Hubballi. It is also known as "Cultural Capital of Karnataka" and "Oxford of South India". Dharwad was earlier part of a larger region called Kalyani, which was under the rule of Western Chalukyas from 8th to 10th centuries CE. Later it came under the rule of Kakatiyas, who built a fort here. In 1347 AD this fort passed on to Bahamani Sultanate and fell into their hands until 1424 when it was annexed by Malik Kafur during his invasion in South India for Delhi Sultanate along with Daulatabad Fort (Deogiri). After disintegration of Bahamani sultanate, Dharwar became independent kingdom ruled by Ganga dynasty rulers from 1425–1470 before coming under Vijayanagara Empire's control till its fall in 1565 AD . The town remained an important trading centre throughout these periods.
