The fort was built by Chitradurga Nayakas in the 16th century. The fort is spread over an area of , and has seven concentric circular walls, which are connected by a series of ramparts, moats and gateways. It has four entrances: "Kote Gate", "Mantapa Gate", "Palace Gate" and the main southern entrance known as the ‘Ranganatha’s Gadi’ or ‘Nandi Gadi’ (Elephant gate). Chitradurga Fort is one of India's best preserved forts with a unique style that displays Dravidian architecture during its construction under Vijayanagara empire rule. The town inside this hill fortress also exhibits typical Vijayanagara style architecture where most buildings have been constructed using laterite stone material although there are some brick structures too like Kotegulamma temple at Malapalli village near Chitradurga town which was built during Hoysala period in 1250 CE .
