Bangalore is located on the Deccan Plateau in the southern part of Karnataka. The majority of Bangalore's terrain is hilly, and its elevation ranges from 693 m (2,274 ft) to 1,837 m (6,007 ft). A small river known as "Yertharaja" flows through the city towards east and joins "Varthur lake". The lake was formed after a dam was built across this river. There are many lakes surrounding Bangalore within its metropolitan area; prominent among them are Ulsoor Lake in South Bangalore and Hebbal Lake in North-East Bangalore. These lakes supply water to domestic households for drinking purposes through borewells installed by BWSSB while some parts of it gets treated at local sewage treatment plants before being supplied to households or used for irrigation or industrial use. Other than these two lakes there are other smaller lakes like Lal Bagh West Canal which supplies drinking water directly into homes but not connected with BWSSB network yet .
