The Belgaum fort is built on a hill that overlooks the city. The Government of Karnataka has proposed making Belgaum the second capital of Karnataka, hence a second state administrative building Suvarna Vidhana Soudha was inaugurated on 11 October 2012.Belagavi (Kannada: ಬೆಳಗಾವ) is an ancient and historic city in India which serves as the headquarters for both Bagalkot district and North Canara (a part of south-western Karnataka). It was formerly known as Venugrama or Bairagi Nagari ("City Of Bairagis"). In common parlance, it is also referred to as "the coorg". The name "Belgavi" comes from its Marathi name 'Vilayati' meaning 'foreign'.
