Belgaum is located 530 km (329 mi) north of Bangalore. It has an average elevation of 642 metres (2,108 ft). The city sits on the banks of River Krishna which forms a part of the border between Maharashtra and Karnataka. To its south lies Kudalasangama, Goa; to its west Nipani; to its east Sankeshwar and Bagalkot district in Karnataka state's northern region. The name Belgaum is said to be derived from "Vellagavi" meaning 'white village'. However it was known as Venugram or Vengurle for centuries before it became Belgaum in 1789 CE after Maratha rule began there under Shahuji I . Before that during Adilshahi period(1596–1686),it was called Gulshanabad which means "City Of Flowers".
