Etymology [ edit ] The name Hazaribagh is derived from the Hindi words, "Hazar" meaning thousand and "Bagh" meaning garden. It was named so because it had a thousand gardens.[1] The town was founded by Diler Khan in 1790 AD.[2] He came here with his army to fight against Chikka Venkatapati Raya of Ramgarh Raj. In this battle he lost and ran away to Bengal after leaving his family members at Hazaribagh. His wife's name was Hazi Begum who ruled over the place till 1796 when her son-in-law Saiyid Nur Muhammad came from Murshidabad (presently in West Bengal) along with his mother Saiyida Begam and brother Abdul Qadir Khan Jafari[3][4]. They stayed there for some time before going back to Murshidabad where they built their new capital city called Najafgarh which is now part of Greater Delhi area.
