The city is surrounded by coal mines and its topography consists of undulating terrain with scattered hills. Some parts are impervious to water drainage, which results in flooding during heavy rains. The climate here is tropical savanna (Köppen "Aw") bordering on a humid subtropical climate ("Cwa"). Summers last from April to June, followed by monsoon season from July to October and winters from November to March with dry periods starting in early December lasting up until February; the annual rainfall averages 1,300 mm (51 in).
