It is the third-largest city in Jharkhand after Ranchi and Dhanbad. Medininagar was founded by Raja Medini Rai, a Bundela Rajput ruler of Orchha state who ruled from 1620 to 1660. He established it as his new capital in the year 1657 when he shifted his capital from Garhkundar to Mediniganj (now known as Daltonganj). After him, several other rulers of Bundelkhand dynasties ruled over this region till 18th century AD. The town remained under control of Maratha Empire until 1782 when it came under British rule following Treaty of Salbai signed between them and Peshwa Baji Rao II on 11 March 1782 . However, during period between 1803 -1817 there were no direct administrative control due to Pindari raids which created havoc across whole northern India including Palamu region.[1] In 1901 census total population was only 1073 out which 855 were Hindus while 128 Muslims.
