Leh is the second coldest inhabited place in India after Siberia. The town has a population of about 27,000 people and is situated at the foot of the Himalayan mountains, surrounded by several high peaks including Namche Barwa (7,756 m) and Gyala Peri (6,946 m). It lies on an ancient trade route connecting Ladakh to Yarkand via Lhasa. The main language spoken in Leh is Ladakhi (one of two Tibetan languages), which belongs to the Tibetan branch of Indo-European languages.
