The city is located at the foothills of the Himalayas, and is surrounded by Shivalik range to its north, east and south. The Tawi River flows through the old city of Jammu. The city has two important road links with National Highway 1A running along eastern side connecting it to Pathankot (on India-Pakistan border) in Punjab via Udhampur district headquarters and NH 44 which connects it to Srinagar in Kashmir Valley via Reasi district headquarters on southern side. A new four lane highway connects Jammu with Samba District as well as Banihal across Pir Panjal Range within Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir . This highway also serves a strategic link between Ladakh region with rest of country including national capital New Delhi . Jammu has many historical monuments dating from ancient times such as temples, mosques, forts etc., making it one among few cities in India having such rich heritage sites.
