The city was founded in 1527 by Ajbar Sen as capital for his princely state which he named after his son Madho Singh who later became known as "Maharaja Madho Singh". The name was changed to 'Mandav Nagar' during British Raj but reverted to its original form after independence in 1947 when Himachal Pradesh came into existence with its present boundaries.
