It is the administrative headquarters of Kangra district. Kangra is located at . It has an average elevation of 633 metres (2080 feet). India census, Kangra had a population of 51,977. The city's name was derived from Kankali Devi temple which was built by Raja Sahil Varman in early 7th century AD to commemorate his victory over Huns who were threatening him with invasion through this route into his kingdom situated near river Beas in Punjab region (now part time capital Chandigarh). He also made it as a center for learning Sanskrit grammar and philosophy along with other arts like music etc.
