The district is bounded on the East by Kurukshetra, Jind and Karnal districts. On the South-West it has a boundary with Patiala district of Punjab state. The total area of this district is 4,908 km² (1,920 sq mi). Kaithal was an important town in ancient India during Mahabharata period as well as in British India's colonial era history.[2] It was ruled by Mauryas under Ashoka's grandson Shatrughna,[3][4] then came under rule of Satavahanas[5][6] followed by Kushans and Gupta Empire.[7][8] In medieval times it became part of Delhi Sultanate before being captured by Mongols who handed over to Khokhars who were defeated when Tughlaq dynasty established their rule here.[9][10]. After brief Mughal rule,[11], Sikhs took control until 1803 when they ceded to British after defeat at Battle of Assandh[12].
