The district is bounded on the East by Kurukshetra, Jind and Karnal districts. On the South-West it has a boundary with Patiala district of Punjab state. The total area of this district is 4,908 km² (1,920 sq mi). Kaithal was an important town in ancient India during Mahabharata period as well as in British India's colonial era history. It was ruled by Mauryas under Ashoka's grandson Shatrughna, then came under rule of Satavahanas followed by Kushans and Gupta Empire. In medieval times it became part of Delhi Sultanate before being captured by Mongols who handed over to Khokhars who were defeated when Tughlaq dynasty established their rule here.. After brief Mughal rule,, Sikhs took control until 1803 when they ceded to British after defeat at Battle of Assandh.
