The name Ambala was derived from the Sanskrit word "Amrita-pura" (city of nectar), referring to the drink that came from a lake. The legend goes that King Vikramaditya and his men were hunting in the Doon Valley, when they saw a rabbit chasing a dog. Following this, they discovered medicinal herbs in large quantities and an auspicious pool with nectar like taste which cured all diseases. Upon tasting it, king Vikramaditya named it as Amritsar ("the place of immortality"). However some people believe that Ambala Cantonment is named after 'Ambal', who was one of Chandragupta's wives while others say it is because there used to be many mango trees here before 1947 partition .
