About Rājkot

Rajkot is the largest city of Saurashtra region. It is also one of the fastest growing cities in India and world. Rajkot was founded by Khengarji III, a prince from Junagadh State, as an alternative to his capital at Viramgam in 1786 when he shifted his court to Palanpur (now part of Banaskantha district). The name Rajkot comes from "raj" ("king") and "Kothari", who were local chieftains serving under Khengarji III at that time. After independence, Rajkot became a municipality on 3 November 1873 during British rule.[6] During Mahatma Gandhi's Dandi March or Salt Satyagraha on 12 March 1930; he made it a base camp between 26 April - 6 May 1930 before going further south towards Navsari via Surat.[7][8] In 1948 after Independence until 1956 it served as state capital for Saurashtra state which merged with Bombay State later becoming Gujarat State since 1960.
