Mehsana is located at . It has an average elevation of 123 metres (404 feet). The city is known for its rich heritage and culture. The Mehsaniya dialect, a Gujarati variant, spoken in the city and nearby villages bears testimony to this fact. The language is quite distinct from standard Gujarati as it contains many words derived from Sanskrit which are not found in other variants of the language. This dialect was originally used by Brahmins living here but now it has become common among all residents irrespective of their caste or creed due to lack of education facilities during British rule when English was made mandatory for higher studies while local languages were discouraged resulting in decline and near extinction of these languages including Mehsaniya which had been spoken by educated people since ancient times until early 20th century when efforts were made to revive them through various means like publishing books on grammar etc., teaching these languages at school level etc..
