Gandhinagar is the second capital of Gujarat, after Ahmedabad. The first was in Bombay (now Mumbai), which served as the capital from 1950 to 1960. In 1960, Bombay became the state's new capital and Sabarmati became an urban village. After Gandhinagar was declared a 'capital', it took almost two decades to develop infrastructure and government buildings in this newly created 'state-capital'. The name "Gandhinagar" means "the city of Gandhi". It is named after Mahatma Gandhi who was also born here; he spent his childhood years at his grandfather's house located near what is now called Motibaug Palace on Ashram Road area within old Gandhinagar City limits .
