Ponda is the second largest city in Goa after Margao. It has a population of over 100,000 and an area of approximately 22 km2 (8 sq mi). Ponda is also known as "Antruz Mahal" because of the presence of numerous famous temples and rich cultural heritage. The town was once ruled by kings who were called 'Maharajas'. The name Ponda comes from Portuguese word ponte meaning bridge which refers to a bridge built on River Zuari at this place during early Portuguese rule.[1] The original name for this place was "Pundalik Nagar". In Konkani language, it's called फोंडे or phoṇde? .
