The region is broadly divided into the following sub-regions: North Eastern Region (NER) has a total population of 1,527,268 as per 2011 census. The sex ratio of the region is 951 females per 1000 males. The density of North Eastern Region was 27 persons per km in 2011. In 2001 census, NER registered a decadal growth rate (1991–2001) of 16 percent; lower than that recorded during 1971–81(20 percent), 1981–91(21percent). Population density in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam varies from 30 to 110 persons per km2 while it varies from 90 to over 500 persons km2in Nagaland and Manipur respectively .In Mizoram ,the urban population constitutes 11 percent while rural areas constitute 89 percent with an average literacy rate being 83%, higher than national average 74%. In Meghalaya ,the urban population constitutes 22% while rural areas constitute 78% with an average literacy rate being 79%, higher than national average 74%.
