The city is famous for its cultural heritage and has many places of interest. Raipur has been selected as one of the first twenty Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission. Etymology: The name "Raipur" was derived from Raghupura, named after Raja Raghuvarman (AD 738–779) of the Haihaya dynasty, who ruled over this area in AD 760. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Rama along with Sita and Lakshmana visited this place on their way back to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana in Lanka. It is believed that Shri Ram Chandra Ji came here along with Sita Devi & Laxman Ji during his Vanvas period which lasted for 14 years before he returned back home victorious. This place was known by different names like 'Raghogarh', 'Rajapuri' etc.
