The district is spread over an area of . It is bounded on the north by Bilaspur District, on the east by Raipur District and Korba District of Chhattisgarh state and Odisha state, on the south-east by Durg-Bhilai Nagar district (Durg), and Raigarh districts (Chhattisgarh) to its west. The major rivers flowing through this region are Mahanadi River in South East direction towards Odisha State from Janjgir–Champa city. The other two main rivers are Hasdeo river in North West direction towards Bilaspur City from Janjgir–Champa city & Indravati River which flows along with Mahanadi river but separate at a distance of about 20 km before reaching Orissa border near Kanker town.
