Bilaspur is located at . It has an average elevation of . Bilaspur lies in the central part of Chhattisgarh and is surrounded by hills on all sides. The city's topology consists mostly of plains, with some rocky areas towards its north-east side. The region surrounding Bilaspur features many small hillocks and highlands, including the famous Chandela peak (also known as Bailadila), which rises to a height of 1,038 m (3,406 ft). This mountain range stretches from south to north along the western edge of Raipur district; it separates this area from Godavari valley in neighbouring Maharashtra state. Another major hillock called "Dindori" or "Kotda Dindori" stands nearby on Bilaspur's eastern border with Raipurs Una district; it reaches a height around 830 m above sea level.
