Bhilai is known as the Steel City of India and has been home to some of the world's largest steel plants, including Bhilai Steel Plant, Rourkela Steel Plant and Bokaro Steel Plant. It was also home to one of India's oldest steel plants Vizagapatam Iron Works Limited (VIWL). The city houses several engineering colleges such as National Institute Of Technology Durg (NITD), Indian Institute Of Management Raipur(IIMR) , All India Institute Of Medical Sciences Raipur(AIIMS-R), Chhattisgarh Swami Vivekananda Technical University (CSVTU) etc. The city is located in a mineral rich region with coal mines operated by CCL at Talaigarh near Amrapali Village on NH 30 about 12 km from Bhilai town. The area around it contains reserves of high grade iron ore which are being extracted by SAIL through its subsidiary Bharat Ferro Alloys Limited.
