It is located at a distance of about from the district headquarters Chhindwara. Barkuhi was founded by Raja Barku Singh, who was an ancestor of the Bhonsle dynasty. He established his kingdom in this area during the 16th century and ruled over it till 1739 when he lost to Bajirao Peshwa I, a Maratha chieftain. The town has been named after him as "Barkuhi". The place is also famous for its ancient temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati (locally known as Mataji).
