Bhagalpur is the headquarters of the Bhagalpur district and Bhagalpur division. It is a part of Patna Division. The city was earlier known as Kho-Kho Nagari, which in course of time became corrupted to Kolhua or Kholha (the name by which it appears in Ain-i-Akbari) and then to its present form "Bhāgalpūr". In 1833, when Lieutenant R.E Newbold was conducting an archaeological survey near Maner village he found a stone inscription with an illegible date but belonging to Samvat 1295 (12th century CE). This indicates that there were people living here at that time who used Sanskrit as their language; this fact has been confirmed by excavations done at Pandu Rajar Dhibi also called Pithora near Ramgarh about 50 km from Bhagalpur town where remains have been discovered from 2nd Century B.C..
