Begusarai was established as a new district on 24 May 1994 by carving out three blocks from Samastipur District: Barahiya block; Bakhri-Gaya block; and Dehri-on-Sone block. The name "Begusarai" comes from two words Begu meaning mangoes + Saray meaning place or abode which means "abode where mangoes grow".
