Begusarai is a district of Bihar state in eastern India. Begusarai town, the administrative headquarters, is located on the northern bank of river Ganges. The district lies between 25°15'N and 25°45'N latitudes and 85°45'E & 86°36'E longitudes. It has an area of 4,766 km² (1,816 sq mi). Begusarai was established as a new district on 24 May 1994 by carving out three blocks from Samastipur District: Barahiya block; Bakhri-Gaya block; and Dehri-on-Sone block.[2] The name "Begusarai" comes from two words Begu meaning mangoes + Saray meaning place or abode which means "abode where mangoes grow".
