Karbi Anglong district is one of the three Autonomous Districts in Assam. The other two are Dima Hasao and Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD). The name Karbi Anglong is derived from the Dimasa words "Khar" meaning 'hill' and "Biang" meaning 'high'. It was formerly known as North Cachar Hills, which was a sub-division of undivided Cachar district. In 1874 it became a part of Nagaon district but on 1 April 1879 it again became an independent sub-division with its headquarters at Haflong town. On 16 February 1881 this Sub Division was upgraded to a full fledged district under the administration of Deputy Commissioner appointed by British Government for revenue collection purposes only without any judicial powers or authority over criminal cases etc.
