Tawang is the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso. It was also where he died in 1682 at Tawang Monastery, which is now a famous pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists. The monastery was built by his two wives and chief consort (Phagmo Drölma) after his death. The town has an airport with regular flights to New Delhi and Kolkata operated by Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd.. A new terminal building opened in March 2007 replacing one from 1964 that had been destroyed during a fire on 27 April 2006.
