The emergence of pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries in the 1990s led to the city becoming known as "India's Genome Valley". With an output of US$74 billion, Hyderabad is the fifth-largest contributor to India's overall gross domestic product. The city hosts offices for 43 international companies and its annual economic survey highlights that it is ranked third among Indian cities by foreign direct investment (FDI) approvals. It has become a favoured location for outsourcing services, with strengths in information technology, business process outsourcing and financial services. In recent years there has been increasing attention paid to Hyderabad's status as one of the world's fastest growing cities; it was featured alongside Shanghai on "The World City" top list compiled by global property consultant Knight Frank LLP in 2013 because both had seen growth rates above 20% over 5 years until 2012.
