The history of Honduras is commonly divided into five periods: the Pre-Columbian time or early history (before 1492), the colonial period (1524–1821), the first Republic and Federation period (1821–1911), the second Republic and Federation period (1911–1971) and finally, from 1972 to date. The prehistory of Honduras is taken to begin with Paleo-Indians migrating to these territories between 9000 BC until 800 AD. An important step in this process was developed by a research team led by Richard MacNeish, who discovered pottery at Sierra Mojada in Gracias a Dios Department that has been dated at 7000 BC.[1] This suggests that during this era hunter gatherers already inhabited what is now called Honduras.[2] Later evidence includes obsidian arrow heads found in various parts of the country,[3][4][5] as well as petroglyphs attributed to an ancient culture known as "Los Pueblos".
