The city had a population of some 60,000 people (in 2012) living in a land area of some 0.8 square kilometers (200 acres). The city is home to numerous colonial-era buildings built during the Spanish colonial period including the "Casa de Recaudación" and the old cathedral. The Central Market is also located here; it was rebuilt after an earthquake destroyed much of downtown Antigua Guatemala in 1773.
