Sparta (Greek: Σπάρτη, Spárti, [ˈsparti]) is a town and municipality in Laconia, Greece. It lies at the site of ancient Sparta. The municipality was merged with six nearby municipalities in 2011, for a total population (as of 2011) of 35,259, of whom 17,408 lived in the city.




Sparta was built on the site of ancient Sparta. The city is located at a strategic position, historically linking coastal with inland Greece. It lies in the Eurotas Valley, at the foot of Mount Taygetos (Όρος Ταϋγετών) and near to Lake Pamvotis (Παμβώτις).
The municipality has an area of 730 km2 and its municipal unit 281 km2.
