The name Magoula is a diminutive of the Greek word "maghos" (μάγος) meaning "small". The area was named after the small river that runs through it. It has been known as such since at least 1590, when it appeared in an Ottoman defter of Laconia. In 1834, British traveller William Martin Leake recorded its name as Mavoulla and described it as a village with 300 houses and 700 inhabitants.
