About Accra

The word Accra is derived from the Akan word Nkran meaning "ants", a reference to the numerous anthills seen in the countryside around Accra. The name specifically refers to soldiers hiding or living in military barracks called casernas, which were constructed as a means of defence against possible foreign attack. The African Union (AU) is an intergovernmental organization consisting of 55 member states on the continent of Africa, with its headquarters located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital city. It was established on 26 May 2001 in Addis Ababa and launched on 9 July 2002 by its first president, South African Thabo Mbeki at the first session of its Assembly of Heads Of State and Government; who succeeded Nelson Mandela after his death later that year. The only other official public document describing this new political entity was known as "The New York Times" article dated 1 August 2002; according to which: "...the leaders [of 53 nations] set up an ambitious agenda for change... They pledged themselves...to close down their border posts...
