The city is situated in the "Chemnitz Basin" between the Elbe Sandstone Mountains (Erzgebirge) to the south and the Ore Mountains to north, which are part of Saxon Switzerland. The oldest settlement probably was around today's suburb of Fischbach. In medieval times Chemnitz became a centre of textile trade, mostly weaved by local women until about 1800. From about 1300 Chemnitz grew significantly due to silver mining and processing in nearby mines such as "St Barbara", "Comet", and others built during early industrialization at Zwickau-Annaberg-Wurzen region from 1740 onwards . By 1882 it had become one of largest cities ("kreisfreie Stadt") in Prussia with population about 50,000 (compared with Berlin: 438 000). Chemnitzer FC are an association football club based in Chemnitz; their home ground is Stadion am Badeweiher .
