Cologne is home to the University of Cologne (Universität zu Köln), and other universities of applied sciences. The name "Koeln" is commonly used to describe a person from Cologne, but there are many exceptions. Most people who come from the city prefer either "Kölner" or more rarely their time-honored nickname ""Kölsch"" for males and ""Kölsche"" for females; those with a family tradition in the city tend to call themselves ""Düssel-Deutscher(in)"". Inhabitants have been called both "Cologners" ("Coloniensis") and later also simply as "Cologne citizens". The English word 'cologne' derives ultimately from Latin '', which was originally an adjective meaning 'of Colonia'.
