The University of Bonn is one of the largest universities in Germany, with more than 100,000 students. It is located within the city-state (Bundesland) North Rhine-Westphalia which has a population of over 17 million and is one of the most densely populated areas in West Germany. The university's main campus stretches along the river Rhine, located south from Cologne city centre on both sides between Bad Godesberg and Beuel as well as between Kehl and Bad Honnef. In addition to its central campus at Rheinallee/Rhinelandallee (the so-called "Kopernikusstraße"), there are other sites scattered through Bonn: for instance, parts such as physics laboratories or botanical gardens can be found around "Im Neuenheimer Feld" near Heidelberg Castle ("Neuenheim").
