The city was first mentioned in documents dating to the 8th century. In medieval times, Göttingen became a free imperial city, and later a strong fortress of the Holy Roman Empire. Today it is an industrial centre and is notably located on the German Timber-Frame Road (Deutsche Fachwerkstraße). The population of Göttingen rose from 38,000 in 1990 to 40,000 in 2003. Göttingen has six universities that attract more than 50% of all students who study there: University of Göttingen (founded 1477), Georg-August University (founded 1737), Agricultural University ("Landwirtschaftliche Hochschule", founded 1882) as well as three business schools: Otto-von Guericke University Magdeburg/University for Business and Society; International Institute for Management Development; ESMT European School of Management and Technology .
