The town is situated on the Main River, near its confluence with the Regnitz. The Würzburg Residence is a former imperial summer residence and castle of the electors and kings of Bavaria. It was built in 1715–1720 by Prince-Elector Maximilian II Emanuel (1679–1726) after he had to leave his original palace due to its destruction in 1689 during an attack by French troops under General François de Créquy during the War of Spanish Succession.
