The district was established in 1972 by merging the former districts of Bamberg, Bayreuth and Kronach. In 1994 it was expanded with parts of the dissolved districts Neustadt (Aisch) and Haßberge. History In 1818, under King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria, Bamberg became a city within Regierungsbezirk Oberfranken ("Upper Franconia"). In 1837 it became an administrative seat inside its own Landkreis (district). The present-day district is much larger than that one: It also includes large areas to the north which used to be part of other counties until they were annexed by Prussia in 1850 after the Austro-Prussian War. After World War II these areas were given back to Bavaria; however most parts remained rural and sparsely populated for decades afterwards because there had been little industry or infrastructure before 1945.
