About Heidelberg

Heidelberg is located on the river Neckar in a steep valley in the Odenwald. It is bordered by the Königsstuhl and the Gaisberg mountains. The Neckar here flows in an east-west direction. On its left bank, near Heidelberg, it splits into two arms representing its original dual course: one arm flows south-west as "Neckar" towards Mannheim (where it joins with its other branch coming from Pforzheim), while the other one proceeds northwards as "Murg". The Rhine–Main–Danube Canal runs through Heidelberg and connects to adjacent cities along both banks of this canal; these are Baden-Baden, Wertheim (Bergstrasse district) and Mannheim (Rheinauhafen).
