About Saint-Quentin

History The town is situated on the river Aisne, and was a major centre of trade in medieval times, developing around the St. Quentin castle built by Saint-Quentin in about 800 AD. The city's first church was consecrated in about 548 (Saint-Médard) but it would be some time before it became an important center of Christianity; its position as seat of a bishopric dates from 959 or 960 (the date given for the foundation charter). From 1095 to 1214 St. Quentin was one of the chief strongholds into which northern France under Philip I expanded; and again under Louis VI after 1131, when he began to fortify his frontiers against Henry I King Of England who had taken Normandy from him at that point.
