Geography [ edit ] Chéreng is located on the border with Belgium. It is situated in the valley of the river Chiers, a tributary of Meuse, at an altitude between 100 and 200 meters. The village lies about 10 km south-east from Maubeuge and 15 km north-west from Hirson.[1] In 1999 it had a population of 3,817 inhabitants (2,937 in 1962).[2] Its area was 12.81 square kilometres (4 sq mi). The municipality has merged with those of Boussu-lez-Walcourt and Neufvilles to form an intercommunal entity called "Communauté de communes du Pays des Trois Frontières". This new community was established on 1 January 2014.
