Calais is a major ferry port, with ferries departing to Dover in the United Kingdom, and Dunkerque (Dunkirk) in France. The daily ferry service from Dover to Calais is run by DFDS Seaways. In addition there are five sailings a day from Portsmouth operated by Brittany Ferries which take 2 hours 30 minutes on average and are operated using the high speed catamaran "MV Cotentin". There have been proposals for a new vehicle-carrying rail tunnel under the English Channel linking St Pancras railway station in London with either Villefranche-sur-Mer or Cherbourg via Calais and its Eurotunnel terminal near Coquelles; this project has been named 'The Chunnel' after an earlier proposal for such a tunnel was abandoned in favour of one further south between Folkestone and Sangatte.
