Cannes is a major luxury seaside resort, with many hotels, restaurants, and casinos. The city is also known for its association with the rich and famous (see Celebrity status), its annual film festival (the Cannes Film Festival) and fashion week ("Haute couture"), the Palme d'Or beachfront trophy awarded to the best film at the festival each year ("Palme d'Or"), as well as for several conferences. The name of Cannes derives from Cana; in Roman mythology she was a nymph who protected all of what is now called Provence against invasions by barbarians: "Canas" being an old word meaning "watchtower". In spite of this legend there are no historical grounds that can confirm such a connection between her story and that of Saint-Honorat's founding father Honoratus or even his presence in Provence. It seems likely that it was used to describe an already existing place named after one or more persons who had come from Canna or CANA before then.
