About Arles
Arles is on the banks of the Rhône river, in a fertile plain near some of France's best vineyards. It lies south of Lyon and north (upstream) from Marseille. The city covers an area of , with about 44% devoted to modern urban development and 17% dedicated to agriculture. It is located at the confluence between two navigable rivers, the Rhône (on which it has a harbour) and its tributary l'Isle; together they form a lagoon protected by several islands: Île du Levant ("Sunny Island"), Île de la Barthelasse ("Barthelasse's Island") or la Petite-Pierre, Îlot des Marchands ("Merchants' Isle"), Écueil des Paquebots (Passengers' Reef), etc..
